Shailja Tyagi is the President and Founder of StemKidsFirst. She is a Junior in Tesla STEM High School and founded StemKidsFirst in 2022, driven by her lifelong passion for working with children and making a positive impact in her community. She aspires to be a leader whom others could look up to, creating an environment where she could bring together her passions. Growing up, she recognized that STEM might seem challenging and that not every child has equal access to quality education or awareness of its importance. Seeing these challenges and disparities, she envisioned a way to make STEM more accessible and enjoyable for all children.
She loves to assist with the organization’s outreach and StemKidsFirst programs! She independently manages StemKidsFirst, overseeing all programs and leading the team of volunteers to ensure the organization's success. She is also a 3-time Carson Scholar recognized for her efforts in StemKidsFirst and WA State TSA winner in STEM Mass Media. She strongly believes in unlocking STEM potential, one child at a time!
At StemKidsFirst, we are dedicated to empowering younger children in our community by fostering their interest in STEM through fun and engaging methods. Understanding the increasing importance of STEM in various careers, Shailja believed that early exposure to STEM concepts can spark a lifelong curiosity and enthusiasm for learning. Recognizing that STEM has become a critical foundation for numerous careers and is used in many aspects of life, she aims to introduce children to STEM as early as possible in the most fun and engaging ways. From candy experiments that teach children how to conduct scientific investigations to coding lessons where they can create their own worlds independently, she provides opportunities for children to have fun and use their imagination regarding STEM. By doing so, she hoped to spark their interest and intrigue in the power of STEM.
To achieve this, SKF actively visits elementary schools in Kirkland, delivering impactful and interactive presentations that highlight the significance and excitement of STEM! These presentations are followed by a mini workshops and STEM-based sessions, where children engage in hands-on activities such as robotics and coding, allowing them to explore, solve challenges, and create their own projects. To amplify our impact and reach out to more kids, we host monthly Interactive Kid STEM Workshops at the local KCLS Redmond library. These workshops offer children the opportunity to participate in engaging projects designed by StemKidsFirst, focusing on building, making observations, problem-solving, teamwork, and, most importantly, having fun! To further support our mission, we offer the Stem and Leaf tutoring program, providing elementary kids with personalized tutoring in various STEM subjects. We also encourage middle school and high school students to join SKF and volunteer! Additionally, SKF decided to foster a donation program where everyone is welcome to make donations, which directly supports our unique fundraiser aimed at providing STEM kits to children without access to education. Which ensures every child is accounted for and can unlock their potential in STEM!
We are a nonprofit organization led by high schoolers, facilitating engaging STEM projects, presentations, and workshops for children. Our mission is to make STEM more fun, accessible, and enjoyable while empowering younger children to explore STEM at a young age.
Together, we aim to inspire the next generation of innovators, problem solvers, and leaders, as we pave the way for a brighter future where every child has equal access to the knowledge and opportunities that STEM can offer! Through hands-on experiences and interactive learning, we also aim to ignite curiosity and confidence in children as they embark on their STEM journey!

SKF has been a tremendous success as a nonprofit organization over the past few years. We have conducted numerous workshops, each accommodating up to 700+ kids, and established partnerships with teachers and several KCLS Libraries. At the Ben Franklin STEM Symposium, we advertised our nonprofit to attract volunteers, successfully recruiting a couple dedicated individuals. Additionally, we have worked with over 5K+ children, started 3 clubs, and visited over 18 schools weekly to deliver engaging presentations. Through our efforts, we have inspired thousands of students to get involved with STEM and gained more than 58 volunteers!
